Wednesday, May 21, AC Transit Community hearing on proposed Fare Increases
and Changes. 4:00 pm to at least 7:00pm, City Council Chambers, City Hall,
1 Frank Ogawa Plaza, downtown Oakland
AC Transit invites the public to this meeting to hear details and make
comments. The fare change would help offset escalating costs faced by
the District in areas such as fuel and health care coverage. The last
time fares were raised was in the Fall 2005.
For details on the four proposals under consideration by the AC Transit
Board of Directors, the public hearing, and how to comment, click here.
The four proposals present the same cash and 10-ride ticket increases,
and all four would raise one or more 31-day-ticket and monthly pass
prices. Two of the proposals include changes to the transfer price and/or
usage policy. All comments received will be compiled for the AC Transit
Board’s consideration most likely at its June 11 meeting. Any
fare changes adopted would likely go into effect in September or October
2008.
To comment, click here.
Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin interpreters can be provided. Call
(510) 891-4851 no later than May 16th to make arrangements for translation.

REPORTS
Bella Vista Park Stewardship Day Grows Young Stewards and Paints Sunflowers

Bella Vista Students Get Ready to Plant...
...and
Paint Daisies in Bella Vista Park
Students at the Bella Vista Elementary School took to the adjacent Bella
Vista Park on the recent Stewardship Day to learn to become good stewards
of the park that serves as their school’s play yard. Joining them
were Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Program volunteers,
East Bay Asian Youth Center staff, Friends of Bella Vista Park volunteers
and staff of the Office of Parks & Recreation who turned out to
guide student activities at eight stations.
• Station 1 Butterfly Team: Learn about planting and plant in
the Butterfly Garden
• Station 2 Sunflower Team: Painting the mural in the 10th Ave
stairwell
• Station 3a Team Weed: Weeding/sheet mulching
• Station 3b Team Weed: Weeding/sheet mulching
• Station 4a Clean Team: Litter pick up
• Station 4b Clean Team: Litter pick up
• Station 5a Dream Team: Brainstorming about summer programming
for park
• Station 5b Dream Team: Brainstorming about summer programming
for park
According to School Principal Shannon Yip, “Kaiser Permanente
initiated the program, reaching out to the Friends of Bella Vista Park,
who have done so much to transform this park. This community event supported
the school’s effort to get students and parents to learn, understand
and experience what is considered ‘healthy’: safe, clean,
educated and collaborative living. Both the involved and less involved
Bella Vista teachers were excited, impressed and thankful for the event.”

Plans for Renovating
Chinese Gardens
Parks in the Chinatown area are getting plenty of love these
days. Just as Madison Square Park recently celebrated its remodeling renovation,
the Chinese Garden, located at 7th St and Harrison, will be slated to
receive entryway improvements and pedestrian safety enhancements around
the spring of 2009.
The Chinese Garden was designated as one of the City parks to receive
capital improvement funding, as determined by the City’s Park
Capital Improvement Project Prioritization process. Councilmember Henry
Chang, who moonlights as an architect, designed this park project and
pushed it through the prioritization process. Although the full master
plan for Chinese Garden will not be implemented due to funding issues,
the Chinese Garden will enjoy entryway improvements such as installation
of new concrete sidewalk, new lawn area, a new seat wall (a landscaping
feature in front of 7th street), and new trees. Furthermore, anyone
who has ever tried to cross the street at 7th and Harrison will certainly
appreciate the bollards added to the median, which will be reworked,
as a pedestrian safety enhancement.
This project is in the early design and planning stage. It is not expected
to start until Spring of 2009, at the earliest.

Become
an ESL Volunteer and Teach Burmese Refugees in Oakland
In the last year, more than 120 Karen, Chin, and other refugees from
Burma have settled in Oakland, mostly in the Eastlake District. Like
many tiny communities of newcomers to the U.S., many of these refugees
lack the ability to speak and read English when they arrive. If you

of their new communities, read on.
Refugee Transitions, an Oakland-based non-profit agency that pairs volunteer
tutors with refugee and immigrant families for tutoring and mentoring,
is looking for volunteers to teach English as a Second Language, civics
education, and academic tutoring for youth. Volunteers and staff work
together to help newcomers develop the language, life, job and academic
skills needed to succeed in the U.S. You don’t need to speak Burmese
or other any foreign language to volunteer!
Volunteers are sought to provide home-based tutoring/mentoring for adult
and youth refugees from Burma. The commitment is 2-4 hours per week
for a minimum of 6 months.
Volunteers will:
• Become effective tutors and mentors through Refugee Transitions'
training program (no tutoring experience or knowledge of Burmese is
necessary)
• Learn about another culture
• Develop a close personal bond with students
• Make a difference by helping a refugee family gain self-sufficiency
• Gain ESL teaching experience
• Have a flexible schedule
For more information or to sign up for an orientation, visit here
