Hi Jason
and Jennifer, My thanks for responding. Too bad that the nifty looking hitching
posts aren’t practical and more expensive than the U’s. They look great on
Sacramento’s streets.
Do you
want us to include a story and the graphics about the MacArhtur Blvd bikeway gap
closure project in Pat’s June E-News? If so, I’d propose using what you’ve
already produced in the handout if you think that’s
suitable.

Also
note, in defiance of commonsense, that the retrofits are more expensive than
installing new U racks.
Jennie,
It was great seeing you last night. We should bump into each other more
often, Jason

Hi
Jennie,
We
considered this design and discussed it with the BPAC some time ago. We’ve
decided to go with another design (as in attached photo) made by the Palmer
Group in SF and installed about a year ago in the City of Berkeley. We’ve chosen
the Palmer Group design because it is much sturdier than the one in
Sacramento.
We
are only installing a small number of these meter pole retrofits, mostly in Old
Oakland and on Piedmont. The problem with meter poles is that they are,
generally speaking, located about 16” from the curb face. Our standard for bike
parking is that racks be sited a minimum of 18” from the curb to allow car doors
to open and protect bikes from car maneuvering.
In
District 2, very few meter poles were left so we will be installing all new bike
racks on Lakeshore and Grand. I think you already know about our “Neighborhood
Bike Parking Plan” (NBPP) for all the areas affected by the meter removal.
There’s a map (.pdf) with the specific locations for Lakeshore/Grand on our
website at http://www.oaklandpw.com/AssetFactory.aspx?did=2963.
You can read the NBPP at http://www.oaklandpw.com/Page127.aspx#NBPP.
Thanks
so much for your interest in improved bicycle facilities!!! Happy Bike to Work
Day,
Jennifer

Jason
and Jennifer,
Please
see the attached bike hitching post photographed in Sacramento last weekend. I
loved the look of this hitching post and want to commend this design to your
attention. As you think about bike hitching posts options, please consider this
design.
In a
separate e-mail, I’ll send you a newsarticle about Sacramento’s move to reuse
the headless parking meter poles.
